Al-Hijir Art Within Architecture

Image
Arkansas, Thorncrown-Chapel, Eureka-Springs, Architecture

Architect E. Fay Jones designed Thorncrown Chapel, a wooden structure forty-eight feet high with 6,000 square feet of glass. Completed July 10, 1980, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

This is one of those spaces where the separation that is often created by architecture goes away.  Being in this environment gives one the feeling of a union between the outside and inside.  The vertical feature of the narrow columns creates a visual connection to the trunks of the trees which come up within feet of the glass walls.

I find that the pattern and relationship between nature and the architecture creates a visual tableau that becomes art.

Shakbak-Ata Zoroastrian Temple, Shakbak-ata Canyon, Manghstau Region, Kazakhstan

I traveled 3,295 km (2,047 miles) from Almaty, Kazakhstan to the edge of the Caspian sea to make this image of an ancient Zoroastrian temple.  The rituals are no longer practiced there so I brought candles to light the inside and show respect for their practice of using fire as a focal point of Zoroastrian rituals.

Zoroastrian places of worship are sometimes called fire temples. Each fire temple contains an altar with an eternal flame that burns continuously and is never extinguished.”

Burning flame

Zoroastrianism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions. It was founded by the Prophet Zoroaster (or Zarathustra) in ancient Iran approximately 3500 years ago.

For 1000 years Zoroastrianism was one of the most powerful religions in the world. It was the official religion of Persia (Iran) from 600 BCE to 650 CE.

While I was making this image a woman appeared at the entrance, came in and announced that she and her family were there to honor a relative who had died and was buried nearby in what the Kazakh’s call “the city of the dead”.  She invited me to join them in honoring her relative. She turned and walked out.

A print of this image will be shown this Saturday, June 30, 2018, 11 am to 4 pm as part of an exhibit exploring the concept of “Art within Architecture”.

A visitor to the great pyramid at Giza in Egypt

Based on a mark in an interior chamber naming the work gang and a reference to the fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh KhufuEgyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb over a 10- to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. Initially, at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years.

Muqarnas, interior detail within the Khawaja Akmed Yesevi mosque, Turkestan, Kazakhstan

One of Central Asia’s largest domed mosques honors Khawaja Akmed Yesevi, the 12th-century Sufi mystic whose poetry and writings had a tremendous impact throughout that part of the world. It was commissioned in 1390 by Tamerlane, the Turkic conqueror, to honor Yesevi and serve as his mausoleum. The mosque was built in eight independent sections, which has helped it survive numerous earthquakes. the building measures 47.5 x 65.6 meters (152 x 215). Its walls are 2 meters (6.5 feet) thick and the central hall walls are 3 meters (10 feet) thick. The dome is 37.5 meters (123 feet) high and 18.2 meters (60 feet) in diameter. These elegant niche-like decorations just below the mausoleum’s dome are known as Muqarnas. They are an Islamic invention that reached a zenith around the 13th century. the delicate and soaring designs evoke Yesevi’s transcendent and complex poetry as well as the mystical ideas of Sufism. It is located in Turkestan in southern Kazakhstan.

When Nikon commissioned me to make images with every one of their lenses I had no idea how challenging it was going to be to use the extreme 8 mm fisheye lens.  I believe a lens should take a supporting role in the drama of visual storytelling.  When the viewer thinks, “wow what a cool lens”  then I failed in my job.  When the viewer thinks, “wow what a remarkable subject” and they become engaged with the subject then I succeeded.  The fisheye lens is a challenging lens for me because it always draws focus to its uniqueness.  After three months of photographing  I came upon a subject which was a match to the circular format of the fisheye lens, the spiral staircase at the Shaker meeting house in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky.

One of two spiral staircases designed by Micajah Burnett, Architect 1820. The staircase was built with cherry wood and is rock solid today. The staircase is in the Trustee’s Meetinghouse at the Shaker village of Pleasant Hill, Harrodsburg, KY.

From the beginning of my career as a photographer, I’ve always enjoyed observing shapes, lines and the way architecture engages light.  This image is one I am particularly proud to have made.

June 30, 2018, I will show a collection of my favorite architectural images. The collection illustrates the “art within architecture”.  The prints will be exhibited and on sale at my gallery, Eastep Photography, 1338 Central Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34236.  The opening will be between 11 am and 4 pm.  The gallery is always available by appointment, so send an email and let me know when you’d like to visit.  WayneEastep@gmail.com

Painters Lucy Barber and Kathy Wright will also have open studios on June 30.

Approaching storm at sunset along a canal in the Florida Everglades.

A powerful storm looming on the horizon combined with the low angle of warm light on the sawgrass created this dramatic image in the Everglades.

The “golden hour” is just before sunset when the sun is about 10 degrees above the horizon. The light of the sun in this position must pass through more of the atmosphere resulting in amore reddish and yellow color beautifully illuminating the landscape.

This image along with about a dozen other images of water from the “Serenity” series will be on display during my open studio at C-3/Central Creative Commons on March 31, 2018 hours: 11 am to 4 pm.  1338 Central Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34236 (between 13 & 14th streets).
