Arkansas, Thorncrown-Chapel, Eureka-Springs, Architecture

Architect E. Fay Jones designed Thorncrown Chapel, a wooden structure forty-eight feet high with 6,000 square feet of glass. Completed July 10, 1980, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

This is one of those spaces where the separation that is often created by architecture goes away.  Being in this environment gives one the feeling of a union between the outside and inside.  The vertical feature of the narrow columns creates a visual connection to the trunks of the trees which come up within feet of the glass walls.

I find that the pattern and relationship between nature and the architecture creates a visual tableau that becomes art.

This image will be shown on Saturday, June 30, 2018, with other prints exploring the concept of “Art Within Architecture”.   The exhibit will be at my Studio/Gallery, Eastep Photography which is part of Art Central.  Art Central is located at 1330-1340 Central Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34236.  Two other artist’s Lucy Barber and Kathy Wright will also have open studio’s from 11 am to 4 pm.

Shakbak-Ata Zoroastrian Temple, Shakbak-ata Canyon, Manghstau Region, Kazakhstan

I traveled 3,295 km (2,047 miles) from Almaty, Kazakhstan to the edge of the Caspian sea to make this image of an ancient Zoroastrian temple.  The rituals are no longer practiced there so I brought candles to light the inside and show respect for their practice of using fire as a focal point of Zoroastrian rituals.

Zoroastrian places of worship are sometimes called fire temples. Each fire temple contains an altar with an eternal flame that burns continuously and is never extinguished.”

Burning flame

Zoroastrianism is one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions. It was founded by the Prophet Zoroaster (or Zarathustra) in ancient Iran approximately 3500 years ago.

For 1000 years Zoroastrianism was one of the most powerful religions in the world. It was the official religion of Persia (Iran) from 600 BCE to 650 CE.

While I was making this image a woman appeared at the entrance, came in and announced that she and her family were there to honor a relative who had died and was buried nearby in what the Kazakh’s call “the city of the dead”.  She invited me to join them in honoring her relative. She turned and walked out.

A print of this image will be shown this Saturday, June 30, 2018, 11 am to 4 pm as part of an exhibit exploring the concept of “Art within Architecture”.

A visitor to the great pyramid at Giza in Egypt

Based on a mark in an interior chamber naming the work gang and a reference to the fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh KhufuEgyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb over a 10- to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. Initially, at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years.

The Mission church is one of the oldest churches in America. Dedicated to San Francisco de Asis. An outstanding example of adobe mission architecture. Constructed between 1813 & 1815. Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico

Making an image of this magnificent adobe structure in Taos is a little like photographing the sunset.  Probably every photographer who has traveled to Taos has made an image of this beautiful building.  This is mine.

There is an elemental earth feature to this structure and the presence of the human hand which drew me to make this image.   I feel it illustrates the art within architecture.

This image will be featured in the show “Art of Architecture” at my gallery on June 30.
