The connection between Wayne Foster and the “guide-dog to be” puppy is strong in this portrait. When a connection between the person and the focus of their attention is established an essential energy within begins to move. That energy and connection can be seen and felt. This connection and energy is the potential power of a portrait. When we see this alchemy we feel an emotional response and our own connection to the person in the portrait is established.

I made this environmental portrait of Dr. Robert Carlson, heart surgeon, for an editorial story profiling his remarkable “off pump” open heart surgery technique. A year later I chose him to perform open heart surgery on me using the “off pump” technique. I’ve always liked this portrait for it’s combination of showing Dr. Carlsons warm humanity and his confidence. This is a situation where what I saw in a person I trusted and put my life in his hands.

Studio portrait with Architect, Dale Parks.

Working with someone who understands that being in contact with the persona within them and able to allow their energy to express who they are results in a warm, “real,” and natural portrait. That’s what took place collaborating with Joseph Caulkins on this studio portrait.

Environmental portraits have so many wonderful dimensions; the person of course plus their space and what they do and the energy with which they show up in their place.
This has been a speciality of my photography from the beginning of my professional career. Having made literally thousands of images like this worldwide I am now working from a fixed place, my studio in Sarasota, Florida.

I particularly enjoy photographing people within their environment. Their place and stuff helps create a stage set for the story around their life. The warmth, beauty and energy in this home kitchen in Santa Fe is very much a reflection of the personality of famed chef Mark Miller.

Family portraits serve many purposes; illustrating the relationships between family members, marking a point in time, and showing the personalities of each person in the family.
No wonder when a natural disaster happens people universally search through the rubble to find family portraits which serve as a memory. It is axiomatic of the human condition that we are connected to memory.

Portrait of Gloria Nagy, author and Richard Saul Wurman creator of the TED Talks, in their home in New Port, Rhode Island. I made this image of them for a GE ad promoting GE-Monogram appliances. The concept was to show “Style” influencers in situ.

Saule Iskakova, History teacher in Kegen, Kazakhstan.
When I saw Saule in the town square , I walked over and said “You have a lovely face. May I take your picture?” She said, yes, but one moment: she retrieved her passport containing her photograph as a young woman. “See, she said, ‘I used to be a pretty.’ I responded. “You’re right, and now you are beautiful..”
