Family portrait; Ryan, Bridget, and IsabellaBridget, and IsabellaRyan with 6 weeks old Isabelle
Time passes so quickly. Thirty years from now Ryan, Bridget and Isabella will be happy that this fleeting moment early on in Isabella’s life was recorded.
No surprise that when a disaster strikes people worldwide return to the site and one of the first things they search for are family pictures.

The connection between Wayne Foster and the “guide-dog to be” puppy is strong in this portrait. When a connection between the person and the focus of their attention is established an essential energy within begins to move. That energy and connection can be seen and felt. This connection and energy is the potential power of a portrait. When we see this alchemy we feel an emotional response and our own connection to the person in the portrait is established.

Dr. Robert Carlson in the Heart Surgery Operating Room of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Dr. Robert Carlson
I made this environmental portrait of Dr. Robert Carlson, heart surgeon, for an editorial story profiling his remarkable “off pump” open heart surgery technique. A year later I chose him to perform open heart surgery on me using the “off pump” technique. I’ve always liked this portrait for it’s combination of showing Dr. Carlsons warm humanity and his confidence. This is a situation where what I saw in a person I trusted and put my life in his hands.
Joseph Caulkins, Conductor Key Chorale, Writer and Mountaineer, Sarasota, Florida
Working with someone who understands that being in contact with the persona within them and able to allow their energy to express who they are results in a warm, “real,” and natural portrait. That’s what took place collaborating with Joseph Caulkins on this studio portrait.
Environmental portraits have so many wonderful dimensions; the person of course plus their space and what they do and the energy with which they show up in their place.
This has been a speciality of my photography from the beginning of my professional career. Having made literally thousands of images like this worldwide I am now working from a fixed place, my studio in Sarasota, Florida.

Chef Mark Miller in his kitchen at home in Santa Fe, NM
I particularly enjoy photographing people within their environment. Their place and stuff helps create a stage set for the story around their life. The warmth, beauty and energy in this home kitchen in Santa Fe is very much a reflection of the personality of famed chef Mark Miller.

Reba Foster with her daughters Faye Foster and Patti Eastep
Family portraits serve many purposes; illustrating the relationships between family members, marking a point in time, and showing the personalities of each person in the family.
No wonder when a natural disaster happens people universally search through the rubble to find family portraits which serve as a memory. It is axiomatic of the human condition that we are connected to memory.

Director of Research, ExxonMobil, Fairfax, Virginia
Collaborating with executives and business people to create a warm, connected and “real” portrait is often a challenge. They are working under demands on their time and attention and feel the pressures of their position. Being able to engage with them so they feel safe enough to open up and show their personality and be present is often the primary challenge. I am proud of this portrait. He gave to the photo session as much as I did. The portrait was successful because he made his personality and energy available for me to observe.
Until recently my assignments have been on location worldwide. Now I work from my Studio in Sarasota, Florida. Contact me to set up an appointment. I’ll work with you to create a successful portrait.
